Understanding Tire Sizes

Different countries developed their own tire marking systems, leading to confusing overlaps. The ISO/ETRTO standard is the only reliable way to ensure compatibility.

ISO/ETRTO Standard

37-622

Width-BSD (mm): The universal standard developed by the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation. The first number is tire width in mm; the second is the bead seat diameter—the critical measurement for rim compatibility. If BSD matches, the tire will fit. Example: 622 mm is the standard for 700C and 28" road bike wheels.

French/Metric System

700×35C

Diameter × Width + Letter: Originally, 700 indicated the approximate outer diameter in mm, and letters A–D indicated width (A=narrow, D=wide). Today, 700C is used for all widths, making actual outer diameters vary from 660–720 mm. The "C" now refers only to the 622 mm BSD. Note: 700C, 29", and 28" all share the same 622 mm rim size!

Imperial/Inch System

28×1.40

Diameter × Width (inches): Traditional inch-based sizing can be deceptive—"26 inch" tires exist in at least 6 different incompatible BSD sizes! Warning: Fractional widths (28×1½) and decimal widths (28×1.50) are not interchangeable even though they're mathematically equal. Always verify the ETRTO size for safety.
